Leading Finnish nationalist composer. Many of his works combine an uncompromising bleakness with a deep-seated romanticism, inspired by Finnish myth and lanscape. his composition include symphonies, symphonic poems and other orchestral works, a violin concerto and over 100 songs.

A fine violinist and viola player. Compositions cover a wide range being Mathis der Maler. Was a ‘modernist’ who wrote and pondered deeply on the theoretical side of composition, evolving his own theories of relative dissonance and its pratical use.

A Norwegian composer, much of whose work reflects the spirit of his native land. Composer of smaller instrumental works and fine, easy piano works. Wrote no symphonies and operas. Important compositions Peer Gynt Suite, Holberg Suite etc.

(1833-1887) Professionally a scientist, he devoted his leisure to writing music. Strongly nationalistic, he was a member of the famous Russian ‘Five’ who devoted themselves to the propagation of purely Russian music. Composition include 2 symphonies – B minor which is being frequently played and the opera Prince Igor with his well-known Polovtsian Dances.

MADRIGAL – Vocal composition of Italian origin. It is written for 2 to 0 singers with each singer having his/her own individual melodic parts, like the players in a string quartet. It is usually unaccompanied although there are some with instrumental accompaniment.
