Bohemian composer, born near Paraque. Studied music in poverty. Was encouraged by Brahms. Features of his work are freshy and vigorous orchestration. Influenced by Bohemian and, to a lesser extent, negro idiom. Works include 9 symphonies, 5 symphonic poems, 3 Slavonic Rhapsodies and many others.
